President Tsai receives US House RSC delegation

2023/07/06

President Tsai Ing-wen said July 4 that she looks forward to signing a Taiwan-U.S. agreement on avoidance of double taxation to create more opportunities for the two countries’ enterprises and encourage further two-way investment and trade cooperation.

Tsai made the remarks while meeting with a delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives’ Republican Study Committee at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Led by Committee Chair Kevin Hern, the group comprises fellow Reps. Burgess Owens, Mike Flood, Mike Collins, Russell Fry and Keith Self.

The president first thanked the U.S. Congress for promoting several bills aimed at bolstering Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. Taiwan plays a crucial role in global supply chains, and in the face of authoritarian aggression, democracies such as Taiwan and the U.S. must work together to safeguard regional security and ensure stable logistics, Tsai said.

The two sides are important trading partners, as evidenced by the first agreement made under the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade inked last month, Tsai said, adding that she hopes the RSC will lend its support to expedite the signing of a pact on double taxation avoidance. She also took the opportunity to express her best wishes to the U.S. on its Independence Day.

In response, Hern called the relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. vital to the well-being of both sides and said the like-minded partners equally esteem freedom and opportunity. The RSC recently released a federal budget proposal including recommendations for strengthening ties with Taiwan, enhancing military backing and concluding a free trade agreement, he added.

There is a consensus on supporting Taiwan that unites U.S. lawmakers across the political spectrum, Hern said, adding that the best way to celebrate American freedom and independence is to rejoice in the mutual respect for democracy with friends and allies across the globe.
