Foreign Minister Wu welcomes US think tank CNAS delegation

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a lunch welcoming Paula J. Dobriansky, former undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, and a delegation from the U.S. think tank, Center for a New American Security, June 27 in Taipei City.
Wu first thanked delegation members for their continued scrutiny of the situation in Taiwan and across the Taiwan Strait. China’s military intimidation and economic coercion are not limited to Taiwan, he said, adding that Beijing is expanding its authoritarianism to attempt to influence the international community.
Such moves are worrying to countries including Canada, Japan, EU member states and the U.S., the minister said. As a key Indo-Pacific nation, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and work with like-minded partners to further contribute to safeguarding regional and global peace and stability, he added.
In response, delegation members said the visit would facilitate exchanges with Taiwan’s officials and experts to deepen their understanding of cross-strait security issues, specifically with regard to the Chinese threat to Taiwan. They added that group members will help expand Taiwan-U.S. cooperation across the board.
Established in 2007 in Washington, the CNAS is an independent and nonprofit organization that aims to develop pragmatic and principled national security and defense policies. It engages policymakers, experts and the public to elevate the national security debate and help cultivate personnel.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “It’s always a pleasure for Minister Wu to talk about key #Taiwan topics with young professionals. He thoroughly enjoyed his luncheon with the @CNASdc Next Gen delegation led by Amb. Paula J. Dobriansky & comprising 16 emerging security & foreign affairs leaders from the #US.”
