Foreign Minister Wu gives interview to Deutsche Welle

2023/06/27

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu was interviewed via video by Tim Sebastian, for program Conflict Zone, on state-owned German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, June 20.

According to Wu, Taiwan has been threatened with the use of force by China in recent years and the Russia-Ukraine war has reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to self-defense. Taiwan has taken note of Kyiv’s asymmetric combat strategy, is working hard to elicit support from the international community and expanding cooperation with its like-minded partners to ensure regional peace and stability.

Wu said Taiwan has an important strategic position, since nearly half of all global cargo passes through the Taiwan Strait; in addition, Taiwan produces the bulk of the world’s advanced chips, thus in the event of hostilities the global supply chain would be interrupted and the world’s economy severely damaged.

During the recent G7 and EU-U.S. summits, political leaders from various nations reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their opposition of the use of force, Wu added.

When questioned if other countries would join in combat if war broke out, Wu responded that self-defense is Taiwan’s responsibility; and that based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. has provided Taiwan with sufficient defensive weapons, while other countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan and the U.K. have shown support for Taiwan.
