Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Roy Chun Lee gave an exclusive interview to De Tijd’s Roel Verrycken via video conference June 21 from Taipei City for an article published June 24 by the Belgium-based newspaper.
According to Lee, the world is paying greater attention to Taiwan Strait tension and the possible worldwide impact given Taiwan’s strategic role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
It is in the interest of all to prevent conflict from breaking out, he said, citing recent remarks by leaders of G7 nations calling cross-strait peace key to global security and prosperity.
Lee said the U.S., Japan and European countries are voicing their support not only because of Taiwan’s semiconductor prowess, but also because of their commitment to defending democracy and containing authoritarian expansion.
Though Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s leading dedicated foundry, is expanding its production in other countries, Taiwan will still be responsible for supplying more than 85 percent of high-end chips to the rest of the world, Lee said, adding that it will take China at least 30 years to replicate Taiwan’s successful model.
Despite China’s ongoing attempts to coerce Taiwan into unification, the situation in Russia shows that using force will bring great risks to Beijing, Lee said. Even if China chooses to launch an economic blockade rather than use force, it is equally doubtful whether such a strategy will work, he added.
The deputy minister called on members of the free world to continue standing with Taiwan to safeguard their shared values. Countries around the world should not ignore or enable China’s provocations, he said, adding that another war jeopardizing global peace and stability like the one in Ukraine must not occur.
