2023/06/12
A sale date of June 15 for three regional commuter passes was announced by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications June 8 in Taipei City, underscoring ongoing government efforts to provide more convenient public services to students and the working class in Taiwan.
Premier Chen Chien-jen said the initiative promotes the use of public transportation, which will relieve traffic congestion and help reduce carbon emissions and air pollution.
According to the MOTC, the cards are branded TPASS and priced at NT$1,200 (US$39) for commuters in Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City and Taoyuan City in northern Taiwan; NT$699 for residents of Taichung City and NT$999 for those in the central counties of Miaoli, Changhua and Nantou; and NT$999 for those in Tainan City, Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County in the south.
TPASS will allow commuters within their respective regions unlimited rides on city and intercity buses, rapid transit and light rail systems, trains operated by Taiwan Railways Administration and limited free rentals of public bikes, as well as ferry rides in Kaohsiung.
Preordered cards can be picked up June 20 and service begins July 1, the MOTC said, adding that plans for commuter passes in nine other cities and counties are also underway.
