MOFA welcomes visit from Tuvalu’s justice, communication and foreign affairs minister
2023/06/01
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended greetings to Simon Kofe, Tuvalu’s minister of justice, communication and foreign affairs, a day ahead of his arrival on May 31.
According to the MOFA, Kofe’s second trip to Taiwan in his capacity as minister follows the February visit of a delegation from Taiwan to his Pacific island nation. The reciprocal show of friendship is greatly appreciated, the ministry added.
During his six-day stay, Kofe will have an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen and meet with Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. He will also call on the local information and communications technology sector to draw on Taiwan’s experience in network and marine cable development in order to further Tuvalu’s transformation into a digital nation.
The signing of two agreements on diplomatic training and technical cooperation with Wu, as well as a treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters with the Ministry of Justice, is sure to be a highlight of Kofe’s visit. The MOFA expects the three pacts to further expand the already robust partnership.
Since establishing official ties 44 years ago, Tuvalu has been a key ally of Taiwan in the Pacific and a long-term supporter of the country’s participation in the U.N. and its affiliated bodies, including the World Health Organization and U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, the ministry said.
Based on this solid foundation, the government will continue to work with Tuvalu on matters including agriculture and fishery, climate change, clean energy, ICT and public health, it added.
