MOFA thanks G7 leaders for supporting cross-strait peace, stability
2023/05/24
The Group of Seven leaders’ affirmation of the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely appreciated, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 20.
The communique, issued earlier the same day, is the third consecutive show of support from the grouping of industrialized nations comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. Leaders from the member nations and non-enumerated member the EU had their annual meeting in Hiroshima, Japan May 19 to 21.
In the communique, G7 leaders said cross-strait peace and stability is indispensable to security and prosperity in the international community, adding that they called for a peaceful resolution of issues in the region.
In response, the MOFA said that China has used economic and military means to intimidate Taiwan and neighboring countries over the past years. Such actions pose severe threats to the security of the Taiwan Strait, the Indo-Pacific and the global community, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, Beijing’s moves were also cause for concern around the world, as demonstrated by similar high-profile statements released following the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in April, as well as the U.S.-Japan and Japan-U.K. summits in May.
The attention shows that Taiwan’s security is now being properly understood as a global issue, and that the international community has reached a consensus on fighting against authoritarian expansion led by China and Russia, the ministry added.
As a key member in the region, Taiwan will continue to work with G7 member states and like-minded partners to strengthen democratic resilience, defend rules-based international order and counter totalitarian coercion to safeguard a free and open Indo-Pacific while upholding peace and prosperity throughout the world, the MOFA said.
