MOFA thanks global partners for backing Taiwan’s WHO participation

The government’s constructive approach to promoting Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization has received global recognition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
As of May 20, the eve of the 76th World Health Assembly, more than 6,000 individuals from over 70 countries have called for Taiwan’s WHO and WHA participation. Public officials and members of law-making bodies number among the supporters, which also include representatives from civic bodies, medical associations and think tanks, the MOFA added.
The outpouring of official letters, resolutions and statements, along with parades, public speeches and video recordings on a wide range of platforms are sincerely appreciated, the ministry said. Allies such as Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley of St. Kitts and the Nevis, and the Marshall Islands’ Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Kitalang Kabua have all spoken publicly to back Taiwan’s WHO participation.
In addition, the Czech Senate, the German Bundestag and the U.S. House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee passed resolutions earlier this month urging the WHO to invite Taiwan to participate in its proceedings, the MOFA said.
The MOFA said the increasing support from the international community underscores the importance and urgency of Taiwan’s participation in the WHO. The U.N. agency must heed this global call and allow Taiwan to take part in its activities, mechanisms and meetings in order to fulfill its mandate of “Health for All,” the ministry added.
