MOFA welcomes US act reaffirming support for Taiwan

2023/05/19

The Taiwan International Solidarity Act passed by the U.S. House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 17.

Greenlighted May 16, the bill aims to amend the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act of 2019 to add that the U.S. should oppose any attempts by China to resolve Taiwan’s status by distorting the decisions, language, policies or procedures of multilateral organizations.

U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758 did not take a position on the relationship between Taiwan and China or include any statement pertaining to Taiwan’s sovereignty, the bill said, adding that “the U.S. opposes any initiative that seeks to change Taiwan’s status without the consent of the people.”

According to the MOFA, congressional leaders including the committee’s chair Michael McCaul and ranking member Gregory Meeks expressed support for the bill. They said that excluding Taiwan from U.N. specialized agencies undermines the global community, the ministry said.

The bipartisan backing for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations is deeply appreciated, the MOFA said, adding that the act also signifies staunch U.S. support for Taiwan ahead of the 76th World Health Assembly set to be held May 21 to 30 in Geneva.

As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue working with like-minded partners such as the U.S. to deal with global challenges and contribute more to the world, the MOFA added.
