VP Lai receives St. Kitts and Nevis Deputy PM Hanley

2023/05/11

Vice President Lai Ching-te said May 9 that Taiwan is committed to strengthening cooperation with St. Kitts and Nevis to deepen the bilateral ties.

Lai made the remarks while receiving the Caribbean ally’s Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley and his delegation May 9 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Lai said, adding that the two countries’ friendship continues to go from strength to strength and people-to-people exchanges have thrived over the past four decades.

According to Lai, Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis are partners in sustainable development. The two sides have a wide variety of cooperative projects, he said, adding that Taiwan will continue working with the ally to adapt agricultural practices to climate change while expanding collaboration in education, green energy, information and communications technology, infrastructure, medical care, public health and waste treatment.

Lai also took the opportunity to thank St. Kitts and Nevis for unanimously passing a legislative resolution in April backing Taiwan’s participation in global bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, Interpol, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and World Health Organization.

In response, Hanley expressed particular appreciation for Taiwan’s educational assistance, which he said has helped St. Kitts and Nevis’ people pursue advanced careers and encouraged more young adults to receive higher education.

The allies share the values of democracy, peace and respect for the rule of law, Hanley said, adding that the two countries will keep joining forces to face global challenges in the post-pandemic era.
