MOFA Minister Wu gives exclusive interview to France TV

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu said the government is thoroughly preparing for possible attacks from China and called on democratic partners around the world to continue their support for Taiwan.
Wu made the remarks during an interview with Wandrille Lanos of France Televisions for a 71-minute documentary aired May 7 on France 5, the Paris-based TV network’s channel dedicated to social issues and politics.
The Russia-Ukraine war has reaffirmed the commitment of the people of Taiwan to self-defense, Wu said, adding that they are greatly inspired by the Ukrainians’ persistence in fighting for their country.
According to the minister, Taiwan has been unreasonably excluded from global organizations such as the World Health Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization and Interpol due to pressure from China. Although Taiwan is also denied United Nations membership, the country will not be stopped from promoting well-being around the world as a responsible member of the global community, Wu said, citing its donations of surgical masks and medical supplies at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to its humanitarian efforts, Wu said Taiwan accounts for 60 percent of the world’s production of semiconductor chips and more than 90 percent of advanced chips. If a war breaks out across the Taiwan Strait, the impact on the international economy will be even more severe than that of the Russian-Ukraine war, he added.
The minister said that despite their geographic distance, Taiwan and France enjoy ever closer exchanges, as evidenced by the frequent visits between their law-making bodies. He expressed his hopes that the countries will continue to expand their relationship based on this robust foundation.
