President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation comprising members of the Youth Division of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party at the Presidential Office May 4 in Taipei City, pledging to keep working with the like-minded partner to promote global freedom, security and prosperity.
Led by Norikazu Suzuki, director of the LDP division, the group includes members of both the House of Councillors and House of Representatives.
According to the president, the friendly ties between Taiwan and Japan are the result of numerous exchanges spanning many sectors throughout the years. Donations of vaccines by Japan and face masks by Taiwan at the height of the pandemic exemplify the special bond between the two sides, she said.
Tsai said that in addition to being close economic and trade partners, Taiwan and Japan have collaborated through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework since 2019 to enhance each other’s disaster relief capabilities and social resilience.
The president took the opportunity to thank the delegation for advancing the bilateral relationship by promoting youth exchanges. The government looks forward to further experience-sharing visits from the division, she said.
In response, Suzuki said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlights the importance of maintaining security across the Taiwan Strait and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. The two sides must work together to communicate that message to the international community, he said.
Suzuki said that he and the Japanese government welcome Taiwan’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, as well as Taiwan’s observer status in the upcoming World Health Assembly.
Going forward, the LDP division will help promote activities fostering even closer interaction between the youth of Taiwan and Japan, he added.
