Taiwan and Israel concluded a reciprocal working holiday arrangement May 3 to strengthen bilateral youth exchanges, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The pact was signed by Abby Ya-ping Lee, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Tel Aviv, and Omer Caspi, representative of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, in their respective cities. Anthony Chung-yi Ho, director-general of the MOFA’s Department of West Asian and African Affairs, was on hand in Taipei to witness the ceremony.
Under the arrangement, every year Taiwan and Israel will each allow up to 200 young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to apply for a working holiday visa valid up to one year. Through their experiences, participants will gain deeper insight into the culture, customs and way of life of their host country, which will enhance mutual understanding and appreciation between Taiwan and Israel, the ministry said.
According to the MOFA, the pact is the 18th of its kind Taiwan has signed with a foreign country and the 32nd bilateral agreement with Israel. It comes at a significant moment as both sides celebrate the 30th anniversaries of the establishment of their respective representative offices, the ministry added.
Taiwan and Israel value freedom and democracy and respect human rights, the ministry said, adding that the MOFA will continue to promote bilateral cooperation to expand the two countries’ friendly ties.
