Foreign Minister Wu gives interview to Czech media

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Taiwan is fully committed to defending its national sovereignty through enhancing military training, developing asymmetrical strategies and implementing military reform.
To deter China’s aggression, the government is working closely with the U.S. and canvassing support from its like-minded partners, he added. Wu made the remarks during a joint interview last month in Taipei City with journalists from eight Czech media outlets.
According to the minister, Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, and maintaining the cross-strait status quo is in the best interest of all parties.
China’s provocative actions following last August’s visit by then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi jeopardized regional security and stability and continue to raise concern around the world, the minister said.
Wu cautioned that China’s ambition does not stop at Taiwan but extends to the East and South China Seas, the Pacific and even Africa. He added that all members of the democratic world need to work together to check Beijing’s authoritarian expansion.
The minister additionally stressed the importance of cross-strait stability to the global economy, as 92 percent of the world’s supply of high-end semiconductor chips is produced in Taiwan. The whole world would suffer if that supply chain was disrupted as a result of China’s aggression, he said.
Wu also took the opportunity to thank Czechia for its unwavering support for Taiwan, citing the visits by delegations led separately by Chamber of Deputies Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova last month and Senate President Milos Vystrcil in 2020. Developments of this nature show that Czechia is a true friend of Taiwan, he said, adding that China cannot dictate how Taiwan makes friends, or how those friends decide to support Taiwan.
