MOFA condemns China’s military drills, vows to maintain regional peace

2023/04/12

China’s military exercises and increased patrols in airspace and waters near Taiwan in response to President Tsai Ing-wen’s recent stopovers in the U.S. are strongly condemned by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 10.

A sovereign country has the right to conduct state visits, the MOFA said. China’s overreaction has deepened resentment in Taiwan while exposing the irrational nature of the communist regime, the ministry added.

Beijing’s drills not only undermine regional peace and stability, but also violate the principles of the U.N. Charter on the peaceful settlement of disputes, the MOFA said.

According to the MOFA, the U.S. has reiterated that it is an established practice for Taiwan’s president to make transits through the North American country and that the standard procedure will not be altered by China’s unilateral attempts to change the cross-strait status quo.

The objective reality is that the Republic of China (Taiwan) has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China, and the PRC has never governed Taiwan, the ministry said. Authoritarian regimes have no right to interfere with exchanges among democracies, it added.

As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will neither escalate the situation nor instigate confrontation, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue working with like-minded partners to deter authoritarian expansion, defend the rules-based international order and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
