The Mainland Affairs Council issued a statement April 8 strongly condemning China’s military exercises and patrols in airspace and waters near Taiwan in response to President Tsai Ing-wen’s recent stopovers in the U.S.
China’s continuous military threats against Taiwan are disrupting regional peace and stability, the MAC said, adding that Taiwan will not cower or submit to such pressure, nor will it adopt any provocative moves in response.
The MAC said the government is monitoring the situation and will respond in a rational manner in line with principles to ensure national security, while neither escalating the situation nor instigating confrontation.
According to the MAC, it is an established practice for the president to make stopovers in the U.S. during state visits to allies. Such interactions with friendly countries are constructive to promoting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the region, it said, calling on Beijing to exercise self-control and not to misjudge the situation.
The MAC said that the objective status quo is that China and Taiwan are not subordinate to each other, adding that no amount of intimidation from Beijing can alter this fact, which is supported by the people of Taiwan.
Taiwan is determined to defend its sovereignty, freedom and democracy, and will continue to enhance its self-defense capabilities, the MAC said. The government will keep working with like-minded partners to deter authoritarian expansionism and ensure peace and stability across the strait and in the Indo-Pacific, it added.
