2023/03/30

Vice President Lai Ching-te attended the opening ceremony of the Net Zero City Leaders Summit March 28 in Taipei City, pledging to work with Taiwan’s partners around the world to address challenges and crisis due to climate change, according to the Presidential Office.

Organized by the National Development Council, the summit involved over 400 participants from 112 cities in 43 countries. It is part of the four-day Net Zero City Expo also organized by the NDC.

Those in attendance included Marketa Pekarova Adamova, speaker of Czechia’s Chamber of Deputies, and Volodymyr Bondarenko, deputy mayor of Kyiv.

According to Lai, climate change is no longer just an environmental protection issue but also impacts urban development, social development and the survival of the human race.

Citing statistics compiled by Paris-based International Energy Agency, Lai said cities are on the frontline of climate change as they account for 67 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is the collective responsibility of all cities around the world to work in unity to manage the crisis, he added.

Lai also took the opportunity to express appreciation to Pekarova Adamova for leading the largest-ever delegation from the Czech Republic and thanked Bondarenko for his participation. The people and government of Taiwan will always stand with Ukraine, he added.
