2023/03/16

President Tsai Ing-wen said March 14 that Taiwan is committed to working with St. Lucia to expand mutually beneficial programs as a way of generating greater well-being and prosperity for the people of both countries.

The remarks came during Tsai’s speech welcoming Alva R. Baptiste, St. Lucia’s minister of external affairs, international trade, civil aviation, and diaspora affairs, and his delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

The two countries’ diplomatic partnership is profound and steadfast, Tsai said, referencing Prime Minister Philip Pierre’s state visit last November as well as Baptiste’s three previous trips to Taiwan.

According to Tsai, increasing numbers of St. Lucian students have come to Taiwan for educational programs in recent years. Baptiste’s scheduled meeting with students from the Caribbean ally and speech for young local residents will help advance related exchanges, she said.

The president also took the opportunity to express gratitude to Pierre and Baptiste for speaking out in favor of Taiwan’s international participation at global events.

In response, Baptiste said that St. Lucia looks up to allies like Taiwan, with whom it can join hands to confront challenges. He praised Taiwan’s outstanding economy, adding that reciprocal respect and trust are the foundation of the two countries’ renewed ties.
