MOFA thanks France, UK for support of cross-strait peace
2023/03/14
The joint leaders’ declaration issued by French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 13.
According to the MOFA, the statement followed the 36th Franco-British Summit March 10 in Paris. It reaffirmed the importance of amicable cross-strait relations and called for the peaceful resolution of relevant issues, the ministry said.
The declaration demonstrated staunch backing from the two countries’ governments, the MOFA said, adding that similar sentiments were expressed in the integrated review of policies proposed by the U.K. House of Commons’ Foreign Affairs Committee last year, the French government’s Indo-Pacific strategy announced in 2022 and the joint statement issued after the 2023 France-Australia Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations in January.
The MOFA said the statement also reflected the growing consensus among democracies that cross-strait peace and stability are crucial to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The government will continue working with like-minded partners to advance regional prosperity and safeguard freedom and the democratic way of life in the global community, the ministry added.
