Taiwan Gender Equality Week to kick off in New York

2023/03/06

Taiwan Gender Equality Week will get underway March 7 in New York City with events showcasing efforts by the country’s public and private sectors to promote gender equality in the science and technology fields, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 2.

To be staged on the sidelines of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women’s 67th session themed around innovation, technological change and education in the digital age, the week will highlight how Taiwan is striving to create a friendlier online space for women, the ministry said.

Leading off the week is Taiwan Night, which will take place at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and feature a fashion show integrating costume design, digital technology and sustainability promotion, according to the MOFA.

In a seminar titled “Promoting Gender Equality in the Digital Age,” Chern Yi-juang, Taiwan’s first female deputy minister of the National Science and Technology Council, will share the country’s initiatives to advance gender inclusivity and progress to date.

There will also be an NGO CSW67 Forum March 6-17 involving 31 civic organizations and presentations on Taiwan’s use of technology to enhance women’s medical well-being and protect them from violence.

The MOFA said the events will be streamed on its official Facebook page and YouTube channel. A short video titled “Power of Women” has also been uploaded on YouTube to highlight the achievements and aspirations of female researchers and scientists in Taiwan.

Launched in 2020 by the MOFA and Taipei City-based Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, TGEW is a collaborative platform for NGO networks that aims to spotlight Taiwan’s work to achieve gender equality in all sectors.
