German businesses satisfied with operations in Taiwan

2023/02/15

Despite concerns over cross-strait relations, 96.7 percent of Germany-headquartered companies in Taiwan do not plan to shift investment to another overseas location, according to a survey conducted between Dec. 9, 2022, and Jan. 10, 2023, by German Trade Office Taipei.

The findings reveal a record high 73 percent of German companies in Taiwan were content with their business performance in 2022. Over 81 percent of respondents reported to have met or exceeded targets.

Within the next two years, 44 percent of survey takers have plans to invest in Taiwan, for which staff development and market development remain the top priorities.

Although global and domestic economic growth remain the main challenges cited by a respective 62 percent and 61 percent of respondents, cross-strait tensions are increasingly seen as a potential future business challenge by 54 percent of the participating companies.

The survey also found 93.3 percent of the German businesses stated that if given the opportunity, they would still choose Taiwan for international investment.

Statistics from the Ministry of Finance show that Germany is Taiwan’s largest European trade partner, with bilateral volumes totaling more than US$20 billion in 2021. The two sides maintain close ties in areas such as academia, culture, economy and technology.
