Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Feb. 9 that while Taiwan is committed to resolving cross-strait issues in a peaceful manner, the government is also enhancing its self-defense capabilities and continues to garner global support.
Wu made the remarks during an interview with Loretta Dalpozzo for a program on the Italian-speaking RSI channel under Bern-based Swiss Public Broadcasting Corporation broadcast Feb. 10.
According to the minister, China obviously intends to take Taiwan by force, as evidenced by its military exercises around Taiwan last August, as well as its constant dispatch of warplanes and warships across the median line of the Taiwan Strait and to nearby waters.
While Taiwan has never given up on holding constructive and rational dialogue with China on an equal footing, Wu said the government will never accept any political framework pre-determined by Beijing.
It is hoped that the global community will continue to call on China to adopt an open approach to resolving cross-strait controversy in a peaceful manner, he added.
Amidst Beijing’s escalating threat to the Indo-Pacific, Wu said many democracies around the world have voiced concern over cross-strait peace and stability and are opposed to unilateral changes to status quo. He urged the Swiss government to follow suit and lend its support to Taiwan.
In the future, the minister looks forward to expansion of cooperation and exchange in areas such as culture, economy, education, scientific research, self-defense and tourism.
In particular, Wu said bilateral economic cooperation will leverage respective advantages in high-tech manufacturing and precision mechanics for mutual benefit.
