The government of Taiwan is increasing its donation to Turkiye to US$2 million in light of the escalating impact and number of casualties following the recent earthquake that hit the country and adjacent Syria, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Feb. 7.
The Love from Taiwan donation will be used to resettle people affected by the temblor and ensure a swift return to everyday life for the country, the MOFA said, adding that several special bank accounts to facilitate donations from the private sector have been set up to help disaster victims, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, a second search and rescue team comprising 90 personnel, two rescue dogs and over six metric tons of equipment was dispatched Feb. 7, the day after one departed to assist with disaster relief operations in impacted areas, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Premier Chen & Minister Wu proudly saw off #Taiwan’s 2nd rescue team on its way to #Türkiye. We hope our increased donation of US$2M & the total of 130 specialists & 5 search dogs help ensure the expedient extrication of all trapped by the catastrophe.”
