Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu held a video call with the Czech Republic’s Chamber of Deputies Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova Feb. 1 to discuss the bilateral partnership and explore potential areas of cooperation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the 20-minute conversation, Wu welcomed Adamova’s scheduled trip to Taiwan in March and thanked the Central European country for working with Taiwan to aid Ukraine.

Czechia adheres to the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights while fearlessly defying coercion from authoritarian regimes, Wu said, adding that this is deeply admired and respected by the people of Taiwan.

In response, Adamova said Czech President-elect Petr Pavel’s call with President Tsai Ing-wen Jan. 30 demonstrated the country’s rock-solid support of Taiwan and the unity of democratic countries. She added that she looks forward to her upcoming Taiwan visit and future cooperation on post-war reconstruction in Ukraine.

Other topics of discussion included industrial collaboration, joint exhibitions by Taipei City-based National Palace Museum and Prague-headquartered National Museum and ways to counter authoritarian expansion.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and the Czech Republic are like-minded partners working closely on global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply chain crisis and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The government will continue deepening exchanges with the Central European country to promote mutual prosperity and the well-being of the people on both sides, the ministry added.
