President Tsai Ing-wen said Dec. 19 that Taiwan is committed to cooperating closely with Guatemala to deepen partnership and expand cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors.
Bilateral trade has grown steadily, Tsai said. Guatemala established a commercial counselor office in Taiwan in January and a delegation of domestic firms visited the Central American ally in July, reflecting continued expansion of bilateral economic exchanges, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while accepting credentials from Guatemala’s new ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan), Oscar Adolfo Padilla Lam, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Tsai took the opportunity to thank Guatemala for its staunch support of Taiwan. This is evidenced by the Central American ally’s Foreign Minister Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores’s visit to the country and President Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei Falla speaking out for Taiwan at the United Nations General Assembly, she said.
In response, Padilla said Guatemala is a friend and ally of Taiwan and the two countries will work together to defend economic and social development as well as the shared belief in freedom, sovereignty, and democracy. He pledged to raise bilateral relations to new heights.
