2022/12/12
The joint statement released Dec. 6 by the governments of the U.S. and Australia reaffirming commitment to cross-strait peace and supporting Taiwan’s meaningful international participation is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Issued following the 32nd annual Australia-U.S. Ministerial Consultations in Washington D.C., the statement reiterated Taiwan’s role as a leading democracy in the Indo-Pacific, an important regional economy and a key contributor to critical supply chains.
The two countries also expressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan-Strait and shared opposition to any unilateral changes of the status quo. They also agreed to work together to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in global organizations.
The statement affirmed their intention to enhance economic, social and people-to-people ties with Taiwan while working to coordinate development in the Pacific.
According to the MOFA, the statement is similar to others recently issued by like-minded partners such as France and the EU, and clearly shows the increased global support for Taiwan and the importance of the country to prosperity and stability in the region and beyond.
As a key stakeholder of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan will continue to expand cooperation with Australia, the U.S. and other members of the free world to maintain rules-based international order, defense of democratic institutions and promotion of regional security, the ministry added.
