President Tsai receives St. Lucia PM Philip J. Pierre

2022/12/01

President Tsai Ing-wen held bilateral talks with St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre and his delegation Nov. 29 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, spotlighting the government’s commitment to deepening the partnership with the Caribbean ally.

Taiwan and St. Lucia are steadfast partners, Tsai said. The two sides have initiated cooperation in areas spanning fruit and vegetable production and sales; information and communications technology education; infrastructure; medicine and public health, she added.

The countries also jointly promote collaborative vocational skills improvement programs for women and youth, Tsai said. A workshop was cohosted by Taiwan, the U.S. and St. Lucia under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework on post-pandemic economic recovery in August, in which participants shared their experience of how to raise levels of economic empowerment for women and youth, she added.

Tsai took the opportunity to thank St. Lucia for its longstanding support for Taiwan’s international participation. Pierre’s speech backing the country at this year’s U.N. General Assembly and similar sentiments expressed by the Minister for Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training Shawn A. Edward at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change were deeply appreciated, she said.

In addition, Tsai said the signing of the Taiwan-St. Lucia Technical Cooperation Framework Agreement will pave the way for more bilateral cooperation and thus advance prosperity for both sides.

In response, Pierre said the alliance between Taiwan and St. Lucia will endure while reaffirming St. Lucia’s commitment to supporting Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in U.N. specialized agencies and other international organizations.

The PM also anticipated Taiwan’s further assistance for St. Lucia’s national development goals in areas such as agriculture, education, digital transformation, housing assistance and crime management systems.

Following the talks, Tsai held a state banquet for the PM and his delegation and said Taiwan will continue to promote scholarship programs and Mandarin education to foster mutual understanding between youth from both sides.
