NDC responds to 2023 ECCT Position Papers

2022/11/29

The government is leaving no stone unturned in promoting digital and energy transformation, helping foster resilient global supply chains while expanding economic and trade partnerships with the EU and other like-minded partners, according to National Development Council Deputy Minister Kao Shien-quey.

Kao made the remarks during the release of the 2023 Position Papers by the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan Nov. 25 in Taipei City.

Themed “Recognizing Taiwan’s Success—Seizing Opportunities in the Changing World Order,” the publication acknowledged Taiwan’s exceptional economic progress in recent years and called on the government to take action to ensure its continued success in a world undergoing seismic shifts.

According to the deputy minister, the government’s development pathway aligns with the ECCT’s suggestions in the position papers, particularly its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 declared in March. Detailed implementation strategies for the policy are set to be proposed by the end of the year, she added.

To this end, NT$68.2 billion (US$2.21 billion) has been budgeted for energy transition next year, while a 10-year, NT$564.5 billion program has been launched to enhance the country’s power grid resilience, Kao said, adding that European businesses are welcome to take part in related infrastructure development.

Kao said that under Taiwan’s six core strategic industries initiative, a raft of projects are being implemented to help speed up digital transformation in key sectors such as biomedicine, financial services and traditional manufacturing. No effort is being spared to draw top international talent to Taiwan, she added, citing the nearly 6,200 Taiwan Employment Gold Cards issued as of the end of October.

As global supply chains restructure, Taiwan is a critical trade partner for countries around the world given its prowess in semiconductors and information and communications technology, Kao said.

Kao also took the opportunity to thank the ECCT for its long-term support, adding that the government will continue to work with the EU based on the shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for the rule of law.
