NSTC Minister Wu eyes closer Taiwan-Europe space cooperation
2022/11/25
Taiwan is seeking closer cooperation with European countries on space technology, according to the National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Tsung-tsong Nov. 18.
Wu made the remarks during his meeting with Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, chair of the executive board of the German Aerospace Center, during his technology exchange visit to Europe Nov. 15-25.
Wu cited Taiwan’s 2021 Space Development Act and the upgrades of Hsinchu City-based National Space Organization in northern Taiwan in 2023, as showing the government commitment to working with the private sector to boost space industry development.
In response, Kaysser-Pyzalla said Taiwan has advantages in the semiconductor industry. It is anticipated that the two sides will strengthen collaboration to produce satellite components going forward.
According to the NSTC, the NSPO shared space R&D projects such as high-resolution remote sensing satellites, low-orbit communication satellites and small orbital rockets while the GAC extended its focus on earth observation and climate change applications.
Visiting Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin under Helmholtz Association, the largest research institution in Germany, Wu was introduced to high-end equipment for materials and biomedical research. At the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, a government-established facility promoting international academic cooperation, Wu shared Taiwan’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
After leaving Germany, Wu visited Arianespace SA in France to check on launch preparations for Taiwan-made low-orbit weather satellite Triton (Formosat-7R), or Wind-Hunter; and hosted the 24th Franco-Taiwanese Scientific Grand Prize award ceremony Nov. 23.
