Taiwan is committed to defending its sovereignty and democratic way of life while expanding cooperation with like-minded partners to ensure a free, open, safe and stable Indo-Pacific, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu.
Wu made the remarks during an interview with Pierre-Antoine Donnet in Taipei City for an article published in the fall issue of Paris-based Politique Internationale.
Recent political developments are raising concern that China is increasingly likely to assault Taiwan, Wu said. These include the situation in Hong Kong, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Beijing’s large-scale military exercises in waters and airspace surrounding Taiwan following the visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he added.
In the face of such threats, the minister said the government and people are resolutely determined to safeguard their homeland by enhancing military readiness and asymmetrical combat capabilities.
According to Wu, the global community has been showing great support for Taiwan, citing as an example the ongoing cooperation between Taiwan and Japan to fight disinformation and promote disaster prevention and marine security.
Countries including Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic and Lithuania have also voiced support for Taiwan, while the Group of Seven leaders and French government have stressed the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, he added.
Wu said the government is grateful to its allies for speaking up for Taiwan at the International Civil Aviation Organization, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and World Health Organization. Such support is vital to Taiwan’s drive for expanded global participation, he added.
The minister warned that China’s ambition does not stop at Taiwan but extends to the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and beyond. He called on members of the democratic world to work in unity to counter Beijing’s authoritarian expansion.
