The Nov. 17-18 visit by German-Taiwanese Association (DTG) Chair Marcus Faber and Vice Chair Holger Becker augurs well for the continued expansion of bilateral ties and is sincerely welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The visit followed those by a delegation from the Germany-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group and another from the Bundestag’s Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid last month, the MOFA said. They reflect the strong support for Taiwan from the Bundestag, the ministry added.
During their stay, the two members of the Bundestag attended a banquet hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang and called on several key government facilities, ministries and think tanks for exchanges and updates on Taiwan’s security policy and threats from its authoritarian neighbor.
Faber said countries around the world can learn from the mistakes leading to the war between Russia and Ukraine. It is important to send a clear message to authoritarian regimes that invasion comes with a very high economic cost, he added.
According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Germany are like-minded partners sharing the same fundamental values of freedom and democracy, as well as respect for human rights and rule of law.
Two-way ties have been advancing steadily across the board in recent years, the ministry said, adding that the government is committed to working with the EU member state to ensure regional peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
Founded in 1957, Berlin-based DTG is the oldest association in both Germany and Europe which advances ties with Taiwan in areas spanning academics, culture, economy and politics, as well as advocates for Taiwan’s global participation.
