Foreign Minister Wu gives exclusive interview to The New Yorker

Taiwan is committed to maintaining its democratic way of life in the face of authoritarian expansionism, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Sept. 5.
China’s provocative mobilization of live-fire exercises, warplanes and ships in Taiwan’s surrounding airspace and waters, as well its disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks demonstrate invasion ideation, Wu said. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was an excuse from Beijing’s playbook, he added.
Wu made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Dexter Filkins as part of a special report published by The New Yorker Nov. 14 online and Nov. 21 in its print edition.
According to Wu, China’s military threat against Taiwan has increased tremendously, in addition to its ongoing hybrid warfare tactics. The government is determined to defend Taiwan through beefing up the country’s self-defense capabilities, he said.
The government and people of Taiwan remain calm and composed when facing China’s irrational threats which are violations of international rules, Wu said, adding that the country will be careful not to provoke through firing the first shot.
