Nauru President Russ Joseph Kun and his delegation Nov. 19 wrapped up their six-day Taiwan visit, which has paved the way for the Indo-Pacific allies to further cement their long-standing ties.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the president’s first state visit to the country after taking office in September is of particular significance as it demonstrates the new administration’s staunch support for bilateral relations.
Kun stressed Nauru’s strong and enduring friendship with Taiwan during the military honors welcome ceremony outside the Presidential Office Nov. 15 and again at the state banquet hosted by President Tsai Ing-wen later the same day, the MOFA said.
During the meeting and banquet with MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Kun reiterated his commitment to deepening two-way ties, while applauding Taiwan’s contributions to Nauru’s infrastructure development and generous donations of medical essentials during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ministry added.
Kun additionally signed a joint communique reaffirming diplomatic relations with Taiwan and witnessed the conclusion of a pact on coastal patrol cooperation.
Other highlights of the president’s itinerary included visits to Taiwan International Ports Corp., Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taipei-headquartered National Palace Museum, Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines and Taipei 101.
In the spirit of mutual assistance, Taiwan will continue to work with its democratic partner in key areas spanning climate change, economics and trade, green energy, information and communications, maritime security, police affairs, public health, sports and talent cultivation, the MOFA said.
