President Tsai receives Nauru President Kun, reiterates commitment to bilateral ties

President Tsai Ing-wen held bilateral talks with Nauru President Russ Joseph Kun Nov. 15 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, reaffirming the government’s commitment to deepening their partnership.
Tremendous progress has been made through cooperative endeavors between Taiwan and Nauru in recent years spanning clean energy, culture, digital capacity building and education, the president said.
Salient examples include the opening of the Taiwan Agriculture and Livestock Education Center and the signing of a coast guard cooperation agreement during her visit to Nauru in 2019, as well as the establishment of the Taiwan Digital Opportunity Center in the ally’s capital of Yaren in May last year, Tsai added.
In response, Kun said Nauru values its partnership with Taiwan, built over 30 years on the mutual premise of upholding values of freedom, democracy, peace and respect for human rights.
On behalf of his government and people, Kun thanked Taiwan for assistance in key areas that contribute to a sustainable quality of life for all Nauruans.
Following the talks, Tsai hosted a state luncheon at which she expressed anticipation of expanded partnership between the two sides to advance sustainable development of the Pacific region.
Later in the day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu and Kun signed a joint declaration pledging to expand bilateral ties at historic Taipei Guest House. The minister also hosted a banquet for Kun, First Lady Simina Kun and the delegation
The pact will see both allies deepen cooperation in agriculture and fishery, clean energy, climate change, education and culture, information and communication technology, public health and women’s empowerment, the MOFA said.
