Tsai receives CAP delegation, vows to deepen Taiwan-US cooperation

2022/11/16

President Tsai Ing-wen said Nov. 14 that the government isleaving no stone unturned in enhancing cooperation with the U.S. across the board to maintain a prosperous and open Indo-Pacific.

Taiwan and the U.S. are unwavering partners who share the same values of freedom and democracy, Tsai said. This is evidenced by the six approved arms sales to Taiwan and the freedom of navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait conducted by the Biden administration, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from Washington-based Center for American Progress. Led by Tom Daschle, chair of the CAP, the group includes Thomas Perez, former U.S. Secretary of Labor; Liz Schrayer, president of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition; and Alan Yu, senior vice president of the CAP.

Placed on the front line against authoritarian expansion, Taiwan is committed to fortifying its national defense capabilities and ensuring peace and stability in the region, Tsai said.

According to Tsai, the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlighted the need to build secure and resilient supply chains through the strength of the world’s democracies, citing the recently concluded talks of Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st-Century Trade, the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, the Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, and the Technology Trade and Investment Collaboration framework.

Tsai took the opportunity to thank Daschle for his staunch support for Taiwan, while congratulating him on his position as chair of the Washington-based National Democratic Institute board of directors.

In response, Daschle said that U.S.-Taiwan relations have never been stronger since the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act over four decades ago. One of the reasons for such steadfast ties is the great appreciation and admiration the U.S. has for Taiwan’s democratic development, he added.
