President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a speech Nov. 11 via videoconference at the annual awards ceremony of U.K.-based Association for International Broadcasting, underscoring government commitment to fostering a free and open media while helping advance press freedom across the broader global community.
During her remarks at the event in London jointly organized by Taipei-based Radio Taiwan International, Tsai said Taiwan is home to a vibrant media landscape, with an increasing number of international media outlets’ correspondents residing in the country.
To enhance media literacy and national cybersecurity, Tsai said the Ministry of Digital Affairs was established in late August to help promote fact-checking, media engagement and transparency for public benefit.
These encouraging developments have earned recognition from Reporters Without Borders, which lauded Taiwan as having one of the freest media landscapes in Asia, she added.
Tsai said Taiwan understands better than most countries how authoritarian actors seek to sow social and political discord in democracies due to its decades of experience in countering external disinformation.
The government is willing to share its experience with the global community to help protect media freedom and cultivate media literacy for the digital age, the president added.
During her online speech at the Taiwan Forum in London as part of the AIB event, Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang also detailed Taiwan’s experience combating online attacks, including those of hackers following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit in August.
As a resilient island, Taiwan has many ways to respond to various types of attack, Tang said, adding that her ministry’s purpose is to use innovation and technology to enhance digital resilience and protect Taiwan’s democracy.
