President Tsai Ing-wen said Nov. 9 that the government is committed to enhancing trade ties and deepening economic cooperation with the U.K. to jointly promote prosperity in the two countries.
Over the past few years, Taiwan and the U.K. have expanded partnership across a broad spectrum of areas, including technology, energy, trade and smart city development, Tsai said. In the post-pandemic era, Taiwan looks forward to working with the U.K. and other democratic allies to build more resilient global supply chains through advanced technology cooperation, mutual investment and financial support, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving Greg Hands, U.K. minister of state for trade policy, and his delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, this year marks the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that Taiwan-UK trade talks have been held in person. The goal is to strengthen mutually beneficial economic exchanges between the two countries, while working toward the signing of a bilateral trade and investment agreement, she said.
Tsai took the opportunity to thank the U.K. government for its longstanding support for Taiwan’s international participation and advocating cross-strait peace and stability, while congratulating Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on his new role.
In response, Hands said Taiwan and the U.K. share a relationship that reaches beyond trade and investment as both countries have strong democracies and institutions and face many similar challenges as like-minded partners, he added.
