MOFA thanks G7 foreign ministers for statement backing Taiwan

2022/11/08

The joint statement by the Group of Seven foreign ministers reaffirming the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is highly welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the statement following their meeting Nov. 4 in Munster, Germany, the G7 foreign ministers called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, the MOFA said. Such unwavering support for Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, it added.

According to the ministry, the meeting came at a time when international order and cross-strait peace are facing severe challenges, including Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proclamation that China will never renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

The statement reminded China of the need to uphold the principles of the U.N. Charter on the peaceful settlement of disputes. Any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force or coercion is strongly opposed, it added.

Violations of legally binding, universally agreed upon principles such as peaceful cooperation, sovereignty, self-determination and territorial integrity are unacceptable, the statement said.

The G7 nations underscored their strong sense of unity and unshakable commitment to upholding the rules-based international order, protecting the rights of all and holding those responsible for egregious violations of fundamental principles to account, it added.

The MOFA said that as a responsible member of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded partners such as the G7 countries and EU to promote peace and stability in the region and democratic resilience around the world.
