VP Lai pledges to combat climate change during Palau visit
2022/11/04
Vice President Lai Ching-te said Nov. 2 that Taiwan is committed to working with Palau to combat climate change while enhancing people-to-people exchanges between the two sides.
Lai made the remarks while delivering an address at a banquet he hosted to thank Palau for extending a warm welcome during his official visit Nov. 1-3 to the Pacific ally.
As island countries, Taiwan and Palau face significant challenges posed by climate change, Lai said, adding that the two sides should join forces to protect the planet.
Taiwan can learn a lot from Palau, Lai said, praising the country’s environmental protection efforts. Standout measures include discouraging the use of pesticides and fertilizers and the goal to generate 100 percent of energy from renewables by 2032, he added.
Taiwan and Palau share the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Lai said, adding that the government will continue growing the two sides’ people-to-people exchanges and deepening the bilateral partnership across the board while working with Palau to maintain Indo-Pacific peace and stability.
Echoing his remarks, Palau President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. said the world is confronting significant challenges in the form of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and international conflicts. Palau will spare no effort in pursuing sustainable development and supporting its partners, he added.
In addition, Palau will continue working with Taiwan to protect the natural environment for the benefit of generations to come, he said.
