Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a welcome banquet for a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nov. 1 in Taipei City.
Attended by delegation leader Reinhard Butikofer, IPAC co-chair and chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the People’s Republic of China, the event also involved members Avdullah Hoti, former Kosovo prime minister; Els Van Hoof, chair of the Belgium Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee; and Mykola Kniazhytskyi, head of the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee.
Wu said during the banquet that since the foundation of IPAC in 2020, the collective actions taken by members have effectively raised global awareness of the threat China poses to rules-based international order. The organization’s success is an indication of the growing sense of urgency concerning the danger China poses to the free world, he added.
Taiwan’s resilience despite decades of intimidation from its powerful neighbor is testament to the strength of its democracy, Wu said, adding that the country’s experience needs to be shared during a time when democratic ideals are increasingly under attack around the world.
Like IPAC, Taiwan believes there is strength in unity, Wu said. Current world challenges demand that like-minded countries work together to coordinate policies, which can be done through legislative power, he added.
According to the MOFA, the group’s visit demonstrates IPAC support for Taiwan and the importance both sides place on deepening partnership.
