President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 29 that Taiwan is committed to deepening its partnership with Japan and the U.S. to safeguard shared values while strengthening resilience in the democratic world.
Tsai made the remarks via a video link during an international seminar held by Tokyo-based All Japan Taiwanese Union on future development of the multilateral relationship. Established in 2017, the union comprises 17 Taiwan expatriate groups including a Japan-Taiwan medical union and a Taiwan women’s association in Japan.
According to Tsai, Taiwan, Japan and the U.S. are working closely in a broad spectrum of areas. This partnership not only promotes regional stable development but also makes global contributions, she added.
One excellent example is the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, she said, citing a seminar held under the GCTF on finding transformative solutions through innovative partnership mechanisms on the sidelines of the 77th U.N. General Assembly in September in New York City.
Launched in June 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S. as a platform for multilateral cooperation among like-minded partners, GCTF has hosted workshops involving participants from over 100 countries and territories. Japan took part in 2019 and GCTF-affiliated events have also been held overseas to deepen cooperation in Europe, South America and the Caribbean.
Tsai took the opportunity to thank the like-minded partners for stressing the importance of cross-strait peace and stability in international arenas. The government will continue to cooperate with Japan and the U.S. to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, she said.
