The government and people of Taiwan extended their warmest congratulations Oct. 25 to Rishi Sunak, following Sunak’s win in the Conservative Party leadership contest and appointment as the new U.K. prime minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
According to the MOFA, the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. extended felicitations to the U.K. government and people and conveyed a letter of congratulations from President Tsai Ing-wen. Taiwan will continue to work with the U.K. under Sunak’s leadership to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation across the board, the ministry said.
Taiwan and the U.K. share universal values of democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the MOFA said, adding the two sides enjoy exchanges in areas spanning technology cooperation, energy transition, reciprocal driver’s license recognition, smart cities and aviation services.
The government is committed to working with like-minded partners such as the U.K. to enhance democratic resilience and solidarity, while countering authoritarian expansion in a time of drastically changing international geopolitics, the MOFA said.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Congratulations from #Taiwan to @Conservatives leader @RishiSunak on his appointment as #UK prime minister. We look forward to continuing our constructive partnership based on our common values & shared interests.”
