Foreign Minister Wu gives exclusive interview to France 24’s Cyril Payen

The government is enhancing Taiwan’s defensive capabilities while strengthening the people’s resolve to resist a potential invasion by China, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Oct. 13.
In recent years, China has been ramping up their military and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan, Wu said, citing the increased intrusions into the country’s ADIZ, disinformation campaigns, cognitive warfare and economic coercion.
Wu made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Cyril Payen for an episode of “The Interview” aired Oct.14 by state-owned broadcaster France 24.
A total of 62 percent of the world’s semiconductor chips and 92 percent of high-end semiconductor chips are produced in Taiwan, Wu said, adding that a war will disrupt the semiconductor supply chain and the global economy.
Taiwan’s strategic location on the first-island chain between Japan and the Philippines is China’s reason to take over the country, Wu said. Beijing’s ambitions extend well past Taiwan into the East and South China Seas, as well as into the Pacific and Indian Oceans, he added.
According to Wu, Ukraine’s resistance is an inspiration. Taiwan is ready to follow the East European country’s lead by mobilizing its citizenry and strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries for international assistance, he said.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu’s interview with @FRANCE24’s @payenc was hard-hitting. Learn why he believes China’s rhetoric of “domestic affairs” is merely a pretext for its expansion & what global consequences that may lead to. The world must join #Taiwan to prevent such an ambition.”
