MOFA Minister Wu gives speech to Czech Senate, think tank Sinopsis

2022/10/18

Taiwan is committed to working with like-minded partners to deter authoritarian expansion and strengthen shared values while building a more free, open and prosperous world, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu Oct. 14.

Wu made the remarks at a seminar titled “Euro-Atlantic meets Indo-Pacific: Ukraine, Taiwan, and the Changing Geopolitics of the World” via video link. Co-organized by the Senate of the Czech Republic and EU member state’s think tank Sinopsis, the event involved Pavel Fischer, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Czech Senate; Olksandor Merezhko, chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Ukrainian Rada; Martin Hala, founder and director of Sinopsis; and academics, officials, and media representatives from France, Sweden, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and the U.S.

The world is confronted with the real threat of slavery under autocratic rule, Wu said.  China practices its playbook for a future invasion of Taiwan through cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, economic coercion, live-fire drills, violation of the Taiwan Strait median line and of the country’s air defense identification zone, he added.

Beijing also uses its influence in international organizations to suffocate Taiwan diplomatically, Wu said, adding that it deliberately misinterprets and abuses the U.S. General Assembly Resolution 2758 to legitimize its use of force against Taiwan.

According to Wu, China’s ambitions are not limited to Taiwan, citing expansion in the East China Sea, South China Sea, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Wu also took the opportunity to express his admiration for the Ukrainian people. Their bravery has inspired the people of Taiwan, he said, adding that the country is ready to work with democratic partners like the Czech Republic to help rebuild the East European country.

Democratic countries’ unified response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine should continue, Wu said. Their cooperation on shared values and resilience strengthens safeguarding the free, open, prosperous and secure international order, Wu added.

In response, Merezhko said Taiwan is Ukraine’s true friend and urged democratic partners to remain united and prepare to deter China from invading Taiwan.
