The government is committed to enhancing Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities while expanding cooperation with like-minded partners worldwide to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and democratic way of life, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Oct. 13.
According to Wu, Taiwan faces cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns from China as well as military and economic intimidation. In the face of authoritarian aggression, the country will remain calm and rational, and will not provoke or back down, he said.
Wu made the remarks in a pre-recorded video during a diplomatic missions meeting chaired by his Guatemala counterpart Mario Bucaro.
Despite meeting the criteria set by the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States as a sovereign, independent country, Taiwan has been excluded from the U.N. system under China’s malicious influence, he said.
Wu took the opportunity to thank Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei, the Central American ally’s government and Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro for their support during China’s recent military provocation. In addition, he expressed gratitude for their support for Taiwan’s international participation.
While working together with Guatemala as forces for good in the world, the government will continue promoting steadfast diplomacy and establishing sustainable partnership with allies, Wu said. At the same time, it will further strengthen relations with democracies to expand Taiwan’s international participation, he added.
