Premier Su receives delegation led by MP Judy Sgro, eyes closer Taiwan...

Taiwan is committed to bolstering relations with Canada and advancing mutually beneficial cooperation, according to Premier Su Tseng-chang Oct. 12.
Taiwan is working to strengthen trade ties with international friends like Canada who share the universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Su said. Despite China’s continuous military intrusions, Taiwan’s economy grew at its fastest rate in 11 years in 2021, he added.
Su made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Judy Sgro, member of the Parliament of Canada, chair of the Taiwan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group and chair of the Standing Committee on International Trade, at the Executive Yuan in Taipei City. Other members of the group include MPs Angelo Iacono, Chris Lewis, Richard Martel and Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay.
According to Su, this is the first Canada parliamentary delegation to visit Taiwan since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic over two years ago. The trip demonstrates the staunch Canadian support for Taiwan and its 23.2 million people while deepening the two countries’ friendship, he said.
Su also took the opportunity to thank Sgro and the visiting delegates for backing Taiwan—including its participation in the World Health Assembly and the International Civil Aviation Organization—in Parliament and the international arena on multiple occasions, as well as for condemning China’s actions undermining regional peace and stability.
In response, Sgro said Taiwan and Canada have many things in common. This is evidenced by the joint announcement launching exploratory talks on a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement and Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, both of which are welcomed by the delegation members, she added.
