12 Taiwan innovations win R&D 100 Awards
2022/10/07
Taiwan topped Asian countries to claim 12 top-spot finishes at the latest R&D 100 Awards, building on its history of excellence at the world’s most prestigious competition for science and technology innovations.
Ten of the winning entries were submitted by government-supported facilities, including Industrial Technology Research Institute based in northern Taiwan’s Hsinchu County; Institute for Information Industry headquartered in Taipei City; Taiwan Textile Research Institute based in New Taipei City; and Metal Industries Research and Development Centre headquartered in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City.
Among ITRI’s award-winning technologies is an artificial intelligence point-of-care diagnostic device that detects diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema in 5-10 seconds. It was designed to help non-ophthalmologists determine whether to refer patients to eye clinics and thus reduce unnecessary medical costs.
Equally impressive is an AI-driven cybersecurity analytic platform developed by III. It examines existing ransomware to identify potential variants, strengthening the ability to combat emerging threats.
Other highlights include a TTRI-made polyol polyurethane resin fabric with moisture-wicking and temperature-retaining properties, as well as an MIRDC-produced continuous-tracking surgical assistance system that uses a dodecahedral marker to provide surgeons maximum viewing angles and improve accuracy, especially in multilevel spinal surgeries.
Established in 1963, the annual R&D 100 Awards are organized by U.S.-based R&D Magazine and widely recognized as the Oscars of invention. Other winners at this year’s event included prestigious U.S. institutions such as MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Maryland.
