President Tsai accepts new Palau ambassador’s credentials

2022/10/06

President Tsai said that Taiwan is committed to deepening its partnership with Palau and expanding bilateral exchanges across a broad spectrum. Tsai made the remarks while accepting credentials from David Adams Orrukem, Palau’s new ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan), at the Presidential Office Oct. 4 in Taipei City.

Taiwan and Palau are both surrounded by the sea and share universal values of freedom and democracy, Tsai said. Over the past two decades, the allies have cooperated closely in culture, education, green energy, agriculture and fishery technology, as well as medical and health care, she added.

Tsai cited remarks by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Gustav Aitaro backing Taiwan’s international participation during the 77th U.N. General Assembly Sept. 13-27 in New York City and said Palau’s continued support of Taiwan in the international arena is deeply appreciated by the government and people.

Tsai took the opportunity to welcome the state visit of Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. to Taiwan for the Double Tenth National Day celebration. The president then conveyed her best wishes to Orrukem for his tenure in Taiwan.

In response, Orrukem said Taiwan and Palau both have diverse cultures, ethnicities and religions. He expressed interest in Taiwan’s business and financial models and is committed to promoting further collaboration in agriculture, aquaculture, tourism and transportation.

The two allies both respect democracy and human rights, he said, adding that Palau upholds these shared values that underpin the strong relationship with Taiwan.
