Tsai observes earthquake drill on National Disaster Prevention Day
2022/09/23
President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 21 that central and local governments are leaving no stone unturned in enhancing Taiwan’s disaster response and rescue capabilities.
Last weekend’s earthquakes in the eastern county of Hualien and the southeastern county of Taitung, reminded people of the threat posed by such disasters, Tsai said. It is imperative that both the government and people stay vigilant and strengthen Taiwan’s responsiveness and resilience for emergency situations, she added.
Tsai said in rescue operations the private sector plays a stabilizing role by ensuring smooth telecommunications and providing humanitarian assistance, supporting coordinated work by government agencies such as the armed forces and fire agencies.
The president made the remarks while observing an earthquake drill in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan.Organized by the Ministry of the Interior on National Disaster Prevention Day, the drill simulated a magnitude 8.0 earthquake and mobilized 1,300-plus individuals.
The MOI also sent a text message to residents nationwide at 09:21 asking people to drop, take cover and hold on to a stable object in case of an earthquake.
Introduced Sept. 21, 2000, National Disaster Prevention Day marks the anniversary of the Jiji Earthquake that struck central Taiwan the year before.
