2022/09/20

A delegation comprising education, science and culture officials and academics from the Czech Republic commenced a six-day visit to Taiwan Sept. 18 with the goal of deepening bilateral ties and expanding exchanges across the board.

Led by Sen. Jiri Drahos, chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Human Rights and Petitions, the group includes Radka Wildova, deputy minister of education, youth and sports, and Jana Havlikova, deputy minister for science, research and innovation.

The itinerary encompasses an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, meetings with Premier Su Tseng-chang and Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun, as well as a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.

Other highlights are the signings of a memorandum of understanding and letter of intent to expand cooperation in the fields of semiconductor technology, education and culture.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation’s visit is warmly welcomed by the government and people. It further underscores the two sides’ commitment to promoting national development while strengthening democratic and economic resilience, the MOFA added.

Drahos was formerly the head of the Czech Academy of Sciences for eight years, the MOFA said. He has been working to boost exchanges and cooperation between the two countries as both a scholar and a senator, including through last year’s bilateral COVID-19 webinar and cybersecurity forum.

In a tweet on its official account, the ministry said “Vice Minister Yui welcomed #CzechRepublic’s Sen. @jiridrahos1, @msmtcr Dep. Minister Radka Wildova, Dep. Minister for Science Jana Havlíkova & other #Taiwan friends. Another congress/executive group following in @Vystrcil_Milos’ historic footsteps, to further our close ties!”
